Benin: It takes a community to educate a girl or a boy

Going to school can be a long, lonely walk for a young girl in Benin. That’s if her parents even let her pursue an education. But a UNICEF-supported scheme of ‘big sistering’ in 16 districts of this West African country makes the journey enjoyable – and serves as a monitoring system to ensure that girls get to school each day.

UNITED NATIONS — As the Commission on Population and Development addressed the overall theme of health, mortality, morbidity and development, a side panel organized by UNFPA looked at the contribution of reproductive health to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
